What You Should Ask Before Renting Your First Apartment

When getting started on your hunt for your first apartment, there are a number of things that will be new to you. The concept of living in a place that you will call your own will be a whole new world to you. And while this process can be intimidating, it is also a very exciting time in your life. Finding a new apartment requires a lot of research and also involves asking lots of questions. However, it’s important that you ask the right questions.

As a first time apartment hunter, you’ll be eager to ask your potential property management company questions regarding communal amenities and other things that might seem important but aren’t necessarily vital to selecting your first apartment. Here are some questions you should be asking the property management company about your potential first apartment.

  1. What are the costs? This is extremely important to find out right up front. Request a detailed report of the move in costs, deposit, and any other fee’s that may be associated with you moving into your new apartment.
  2. What is included in the rent? Find out what utilities will be billed through the property management company. This way you’ll know which utilities will be paid for through an account in your name.
  3. Are pets allowed? Many apartments don’t allow pets of any kind, so if you own a pet, you should inform the property management company up front. Certain properties allow pets but only accept those that are less than 40 pounds.

Apartment hunting for the first time is an exciting event in a person’s life. Be sure not to get too excited about the “looks” or amenities of a new place before you’ve asked all of the important questions. While the questions listed here are important, they aren’t the only ones you should be asking.
